CCSDS standardized ranging
for Optical Communication
Terminals
This project concentrates on developing a demonstration testbed, which will also facilitate standardization. A significant part of the work is the design of optical ranging functionality in FPGA code.
Our specialized team in optical communication standards is actively participating in one of the CCSDS (Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems) working groups. Together with specialists from space agencies such as NASA and ESA, AROBS Polska is working on standardizing laser ranging for optical communication.
This joint effort creates a blue book for laser ranging to send data. Blue books are recommended standards that become ISO standards. Our engineers are participating in developing this future industry standard.
We are the first company in Europe to work on this type of laser ranging that has an optical communication channel as a functionality.

Conventional radio frequency (RF) communication limits data transfer speeds. Logistically, bigger antennas are required to have a higher transfer rate, which makes it impractical and adds extra costs.

The use of a narrower beam reduces the area where unwanted parties can intercept the message.

CCSDS Standardized Ranging for Optical Communication Terminals
Laser ranging is a precise distance measurement technique used in this type of communication. AROBS Polska initiated its activities in this field by collaborating with Nicolaus Copernicus University of Toruń (Prime Contractor) and WORK Microwave GmbH on the project implemented for ESA, called “Laser Ranging for Optical Communication Terminals.” This project aims to develop an FPGA code implementation that extends its capabilities to include distance measurement between the optical communication terminal and objects in space.
